This book falls squarely into that sweet spot where the reader wants a chapter book but still needs a load of pictures alongside the slightly more elevated text… Sort of Encyclopedia Brown with magic, if you will. I like the hard-boiled kid detective. I like the octopus tending bar (a milkshake bar, but still). I like that the client isn’t all that they seem. Heck, I like the ending. Very strange. Very French.
