“Theatrical, confrontational, painterly, expressive.” This is how photographer Tim Walker describes the makeup artistry of Lucy Bridge, whom he has known since spotting her on a bus in East London more than fifteen years ago and asking to take her picture.
Lucy Bridge is the first book on the work of the celebrated makeup artist, created through a close collaboration between Bridge and renowned art director Veronica Ditting. Every image is infused with Bridge’s authentic vision, technical skill, subversive attitude, and instinctive use of color, texture, and mark-making, from adhesive crystals to sweeping brushstrokes, gloss lips to allover metallic body paint.
This book presents ten distinct visual stories—mixing high-fashion editorials, specially commissioned photo shoots, looks created for the runway, and exclusive behind-the-scenes pictures—and finishes with a section of career highlights. Featured imagery includes shoots with leading photographers such as Paolo Roversi, Carlijn Jacobs, Thurstan Redding, and Oliver Hadlee Pearch, as well as top stylists and models, from Vanessa Reid to Alex Consani.
Texts come from those who know and have worked closely with Lucy, including Tim Walker, model Saskia de Brauw, and designers Dries Van Noten and Haider Ackermann. And in a nod to the intimate, personal nature of makeup, an interview with Lucy’s mother Julia reveals their shared love of makeup and fashion, and how there was only ever one career for her daughter.
