History of War: Infographics

Vincent Bernard, Laurent Touchard, Julien Peltier

A comprehensive visual survey of one of the most pressing and destructive phenomena in human history.

This ambitious and richly informative volume offers a sweeping visual history of warfare across every era and continent—from prehistory to now—in a single volume. Combining hundreds of infographics and meticulously compiled data, it reveals the histories of how armies were formed, how soldiers lived and fought, and how military innovation has shaped the course of human civilization.

Organized chronologically, the book traces the evolution of warfare from the first Stone-Age weapons to chariots and gunpowder, mechanized combat, nuclear arms, aerial drones, and today’s digital battlefields. Sweeping across eras and continents, it explores both the famous defining military traditions of history—from the Roman legions and medieval chivalry to Napoleon’s armies and Blitzkrieg—and the lesser-known stories that shaped the art of war, including Aztec warriors, Ming Dynasty China’s military system, the campaigns of the formidable Mongol general Subotai, and the financing of the American Civil War.

This is required reading for anyone in search of the facts, figures, and fundamental tenets of warfare throughout human history.
