VINCENT VAN GOGH—THE LETTERS
Edited by Leo Jansen, Hans Luijten, and Nienke Bakker

A major publishing event: Van Gogh’s letters in their unexpurgated form, newly translated, with explanatory notes, and featuring more than 2,000 works of art to which the artist refers in his letters

Vincet van Gogh--Letters

Vincent van Gogh’s correspondence is renowned for its immense value as a human document and for its wealth of biographical and art historical information. The 900 letters that still exist tell the story of van Gogh’s quest for his vocation; of the close ties with his brother Theo, who gave him unconditional support; of his sometimes troubled friendships; of his longing for recognition; and, above all, of his passion for art and literature.

Since 1994, the Van Gogh Museum and the Huygens Institute in The Hague have been working on a new scholarly edition of the complete correspondence. The result is this six-volume compendium: a comprehensive, up-to-date, and extensively annotated edition of van Gogh’s letters as he actually wrote them, without textual refinements, retranslations, amendments, or excised passages.

For the first time, all the works to which van Gogh refers are shown alongside the letters: not only the paintings and drawings on which he himself was working but also the works of art by others that he mentioned. In this way, the rich visual world of van Gogh is brought to life.

Leo Jansen is Curator of Paintings, Hans Luijten is Curator of Research, and Nienke Bakker is an academic researcher at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
